I was born to a plumber and a housewife in South Africa in 1983. Off to a good start. I grew up trying to avoid becoming a plumber (couldn't escape it altogether), and pursued a natural flair for design, coupled with a turn for technical detail and a practical approach to everything. Predictably, this led me into the signage industry. Along the way I have worked in Mechanics, Carpentry, Building, Plumbing, Electronics, Security, Sales... But all the time I was really a designer.
I attended public school through 8th grade, then completed high school grades 9-12 by correspondence over two years, while working part time. I also studied Engineering drawing and AutoCAD up to N5 level.
I now hold a bachelor's degree in graphic design, gained through experience, not through study (Evaluated by CCI Foreign Credential Evaluation Experts).
In 2017 I fled from communism in South Africa and came to the US with my household and the clothes on our backs. I managed to get a job in a local sign shop, and here I am.
I have always been into graphic design. As far back as I remember, I loved messing about with paper & pens, scissors & glue, paint & blow-pens (Anyone remember those?).
When I discovered the computer, it opened up a whole new world of possibility. I have never studied graphic design. I just loved it, and did it, and that's what I'm still doing today. Everything I've learned, I've learned through the necessity of creating the thing that I pictured in my mind. "There is the goal, now how am I going to reach it?"
What I love about signage is that it is both pretty and practical (at least it should be). Everybody loves something pretty, but if it has no practical use, what is the point?
I have had over 25 years of working experience in all types of design - from logo design and corporate identity development; print and wide format design and prepress; architectural signage; storefront, wayfinding and ADA signage; vehicle and fleet graphics. Over the past 7 years particularly, I have had daily hands on experience with not only the design, but also the production and installation of all of all types of commercial and decorative graphics and signage.
I'm not an expert or a specialist in anything, but I've been fortunate enough to have been exposed to just about everything.
Below is a varied assortment of examples of my work. Visit my portfolio page for more detail on these.
